Beau Gibson & Finch OnslowSaint Denis, the Paladin 19.4.1890 It had been a couple of intensely busy weeks during which Finch hadn’t had much time to enjoy what life was really about—enjoyment and relaxation. Today was the day when Finch had the entire day finally to himself. Though this time that didn’t mean settling in his living room, kicking his feet up with a nice glass of wine and a good book. Sure, that was how a lot of his free time was spent, yet he had other plans for this night. Heading down to the Paladin, more specifically the underground parts of the establishment, was a much more fitting plan after two weeks of not visiting the place. He missed the relaxed atmosphere, his friends, and a man whose image had been living in Finch’s mind during his absence from the Paladin. With that plan in mind, Finch was preening himself in front of the mirror right beside the front door of his apartment. After all, wherever Finch went, he, of course, had to look presentable. His hair neatly swept back, clothes without a single wrinkle, and facial hair well-groomed. Nothing less would do, absolutely not. He had a reputation to uphold, despite the fact that few people actually recognised him, not to mention that the place he was going to was a lot more lax with all kinds of expectations. Still, Finch tended to feel unlike himself if there was anything amiss when it came to his appearance, so he would preen himself in front of the mirror Yet this time Finch seemed to take quite a lot longer in front of the mirror compared to the usual, a gentle smile tugging at the corners of his lips. It was unlike the usual polite, yet a touch impersonal pleasant expression on Finch’s face. No, this one sparked stars in the corners of his eyes, a genuine joy flitting across his face as his mind wandered to what the night would bring. Thoughts wandering to a certain someone Finch hoped to meet at the secret saloon. Catching this thought, Finch huffed in amusement. He didn’t even know if Beau would be at the Paladin, yet he was smiling like a schoolboy at the possibility of running into him. “Oh, what a silly old man”, Finch chuckled to himself, shaking his head, though the smile on his face did not falter. He didn’t glance back in the mirror again, instead grabbing a better hold of his cane as he prepared to make the trip to the Paladin. Luckily it wasn’t too far. Finch hadn’t exactly expected to fall for Beau. In fact, initially he had thought that flirting with the man was simply innocent fun—after all, what would a young man like Beau want to do with an older gentleman like Finch. But apparently Finch had judged Beau’s tastes wrong, since he seemed to fit into them effortlessly. He wouldn’t call it love, yet the infatuation Finch harbored towards the man was almost as intoxicating. He craved Beau’s attention, showering him with adoration in turn. It had been quite a while since the last time Finch had an affair like this one, lingering in his mind as the Paladin grew closer with every step. Once Finch stepped through the doors of the familiar establishment, he headed straight to the bar counter, like many of the other patrons tended to. Yet unlike them, he wasn’t about to order a drink. Instead, Finch gave a name to the bartender behind the counter—a false one, Clarence Kimborough, just in case the list with all the patrons would fall into the wrong hands. After all, such information could prove to be the downfall of a man. Finch wasn’t about to let it be his. Thoughts of the basement being raided by the police while he was there had crossed Finch’s mind a couple of times, yet if that was to be his destiny, then so be it. The Paladin had proven to be a lifeline for Finch, a haven where he could escape the rest of the world, even if it was just for a night at a time. He wasn’t about to let go of that out of fear for the law. It hadn’t stopped him before, why would it stop now? Though the stairs leading to the basement always proved to be more of a deterrent than the law. Yet Finch made it down them slowly, but safely, like he had done countless times before, stepping through the wooden doors of the secret saloon in the basement. |

Askeleet otettiin saluunan ovista sisään, josta matka jatkui baaritiskille. Utelias katse kiersi saluunan alakerran tiloissa. |

Finch found his place among friends once he got inside, joining them with a drink in hand. This side of the Paladin was never exactly busy, yet the relaxed atmosphere was exactly what Finch needed. This time nobody was playing the piano in the corner, chatter filling the room instead. To Finch’s disappointment he hadn’t spotted Beau, which did put a damper on his mood for a moment. After all, he hadn’t seen the man in a while, hoping he’d finally cut that streak tonight. Though if that wasn’t in the cards for tonight, he’d surely see the man in the near future. With that in mind, that little setback melted away, making way for smiles spurred on by the conversation flowing between Finch and his friends.
Though despite him almost giving up hope. Finch’s wishes were fulfilled as he spotted a familiar man stepping through the doors. Beau drew his attention instantly, a familiar twinkle making its home in the corners of Finch’s eyes yet again. He swiftly lowered his drink, laying the glass on the table as he raised his other hand to grab Beau’s attention with a gentle wave. He would’ve gotten up to greet the man, if he wasn’t settled on his seat so comfortably. Besides, there was an unusually sharp ache in his ankle even at rest, one that had gotten worse in the past few days. He wasn’t about to put weight on it if he could avoid doing so. |

It didn’t take long for Beau to make his way to the table. Finch returned the smile the other man was giving him, eyes following the man as he got closer. Instead of getting up to greet the man, Finch pushed the chair next to him—which was conveniently the only one that was free around the table—so that Beau could take a seat more easily. “There you are my dear”, Finch greeted the man as he sat down. “I was already worried you might not show up at all tonight.” Finch’s hand brushed against Beau’s forearm as the man leaned in to tell him how he missed him. Finch hummed in agreement, he would’ve made the trip to the Paladin earlier if he had the time or the energy. Alas, sometimes other things were in the way, and sorting out something for Maeve took priority. But at the very least Finch was there now, although it made him feel like an immature youngster considering only a few weeks apart had made him miss the man this much. “The past few weeks have been insanely busy”, Finch stated, yet instantly leaned back as he waved his hand dismissively. “But enough about that, it’s all boring. You wouldn’t want to hear any of it.” Truth be told some of it might have been a bit incriminating. Nothing like what Finch had been doing before the position he held these days, yet it wasn’t like every part of Finch’s job description could withstand the light of day. Besides, it really was pretty boring in the end. “How have you been?” he asked in turn. How Beau had been faring sounded like much more of an interesting topic than dancing around the sensitive parts of his everyday life, trying to craft a narrative that sounded interesting when almost everything that was even remotely fascinating was something Finch wasn’t exactly supposed to be revealing. |

Hän halusi kuroa menetettyä aikaa umpeen, jonka he olivat erossa. Tarkoitus olisi syventää suhdetta ja katsoa kortit huolellisesti läpi. |

Finch raised an amused eyebrow at the man as he called him love. From an American mouth it sounded serious, more than just an everyday pet name. Finch wouldn’t go as far as to call whatever they shared love, unlike the younger, more inexperienced man next to him seemed to. Though Finch found it a bit endearing more than off-putting, and didn’t put much weight to Beau’s little pet name. It wasn’t like he didn’t care about Beau—on the contrary. He had grown surprisingly strong feelings for the other man during their short little affair, yet he was still feeling where all of this was heading.
Without giving the little slip any more thought, Finch nodded as Beau told him what had been happening in his life. Apparently Beau’s everyday life had been just as filled with work as Finch’s had been. No doubt their lives looked in no way alike, Beau’s line of work being a lot more physical, whereas Finch’s days were filled with papers and numbers. “So, boring for you as well, Finch muttered, grabbing his glass from the table, raising it a bit. “Well…here’s to a more interesting night.” With a sly smile Finch didn’t wait for Beau to join in on the toast before taking a swig of his drink.

Tummatukka kohotti omaa lasiaan, josta otti hörpyn. |

The fingers on Finch’s thigh seemed to return as a bit more adventurous than they had been a moment ago, a little too eager for Finch. Still, he let the hand roam for a moment—the younger man truly did seem quite eager after being apart for a few weeks. Finch’s thigh tensed a little as a reaction to the squeeze Beau gave him, his own hand smoothly sliding palm up under Beau’s. He held Beau’s hand gently while stroking the back of it with his thumb, this little rejection of the other’s advance turning into a gentle expression of fondness in Finch’s hands. He didn’t mind soft touches or quick kisses out here in the safety of the Paladin’s basement, yet bolder advances he wished to leave for later. After all, they were still in polite company, even though the societal rules were a bit more lax there. “I missed you too, darling”, Finch echoed the sentiment Beau had expressed. But even though he had missed the man, Finch was looking for more than just physical intimacy from this night, and he was going to take his time socializing. Beau could wait, and if he couldn’t—well, that wasn’t a problem for Finch to solve.
The discussion around the table had halted for the moment Beau arrived, the others politely—if not a bit awkwardly—waiting for Finch’s attention to turn back to the conversation, as well as welcoming Beau into it. “We were just talking about the whole chief of police debacle that went down this week”, Finch caught Beau up to speed. “Have you heard? He got caught releasing a prisoner after she seduced him. Not exactly surprising, though still a scandal. That man is…well…” Finch chuckled. He’d seen the chief of police a couple of times, the man sure was an interesting character. As slimy as a man could get, corrupt on top of it, and if any of what Finch had heard of the man through some of his contacts, that was just the cherry on top.
